After exploring the vibrant world of resin art, I felt it was time to return to something more fundamental—sketching. Sketching has always been a calming and fulfilling way to express creativity. In this blog, I’ll walk you through my step-by-step process of how I approach sketching, and share how you can also use this skill to earn through commissioned artwork.
Why I Chose Sketching for a Change ?
Sketching offers a simplicity that’s refreshing after working with more complex mediums like resin. It’s a form of art that allows you to capture ideas quickly and refine them over time. For me, this shift is a way to reconnect with the basics of art—lines, shading, and form—while also opening up new opportunities for commissioned work.
Pencils:
I use a range from H (hard) to B (soft) to achieve different effects.
3. Refining the Outline
Sketchbook:
A good-quality sketchbook that can handle erasing and blending is essential.
Erasers:
A kneaded eraser for light adjustments and a precision eraser for fine details.
Blending Stumps:
These are perfect for creating smooth gradients and shadows.
Sharpener:
Keeping my pencils sharp helps in maintaining clean, precise lines.
2. Starting with Basic Shapes
Every sketch begins with basic shapes. Whether I’m sketching a face, an object, or a landscape, I start by lightly drawing the foundational shapes. This step helps me get the proportions and layout right before diving into the details.
3. Refining the Outline
Once the basic shapes are in place, I begin refining the outline. I gradually add more definition to the contours, making sure to adjust as I go. This step is about slowly bringing the subject to life.
4. Adding Details
4. Adding Details
you can see this is where the sketch really starts to come together. I focus on the finer details like facial features, textures, or intricate patterns. I use lighter strokes to build up these elements, ensuring that I capture the essence of what I’m sketching.
5. Shading
5. Shading
Shading is crucial for adding depth and dimension. I use different pencil grades to create a range of tones, from light to dark. Starting with the lightest areas, I gradually build up the shadows, adding contrast and realism to the sketch.
6. Blending
6. Blending
To achieve a smooth finish, I use blending stumps or my fingers to blend the pencil strokes. This step softens the lines and creates a seamless transition between light and shadow, giving the sketch a more polished look.
7. Final Touches

The final step is reviewing the sketch and making any necessary adjustments. I might use an eraser to add highlights or go over certain areas with a darker pencil to enhance the contrast. It’s about refining the sketch until it feels complete.
Using Sketching as a Source of Income
Sketching isn’t just a hobby it can be a valuable skill for earning income through commissioned artwork. Here’s how I approach it:
Creating a Portfolio:I showcase my best sketches in a portfolio that highlights my range of subjects and styles.
Offering Custom Sketches:
Personalized sketches are in high demand, especially for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, or anniversaries.
Setting Prices:
I base my pricing on the time, effort, and complexity of the work. It’s important to be transparent about rates and what clients can expect.
Promoting My Work:
I use social media platforms like Instagram to share my sketches and connect with potential clients. Engaging with my audience by showing my process helps build interest.
Taking on Commissions:
I start by offering specific services, such as portrait sketches, pet sketches, or architectural sketches. Clear communication with clients ensures that their expectations are met.
Sketching has become a rewarding way for me to not only express my creativity but also to earn through commissioned work. Whether you’re looking to try something new or want to turn your passion for sketching into a source of income, I hope this blog inspires you to pick up a pencil and start sketching. The possibilities are endless, and the joy of creating something unique is truly fulfilling.
