In this blog, I’m excited to guide you through the process of creating a serene sunset painting that captures the beauty of the moment between day and night. This scene features a tree by the lakeside, with birds perched in its branches and flying around, set against a sky that transitions from red to blue. Materials Needed 🖌️

  • Canvas paper
  • Acrylic paints (red, blue, black, and white)
  • Paintbrushes (a large flat brush, a small detail brush, and a medium round brush)
  • Palette for mixing colors
  • Water and a cloth for cleaning brushes

Preparing Your Canvas Paper

First, I chose canvas paper as the base for my painting. The texture of canvas paper holds the paint well and gives the painting a rich feel. Before starting, I made sure the paper was clean and ready to go. If you prefer, you can lightly sketch the outline of the tree and birds to guide your painting, but I decided to paint directly for a more spontaneous feel.

Painting the Gradient Sky 🎨

Applying Red at the Top: 

I began by applying red acrylic paint across the top of the canvas using a large flat brush. This red section represents the warmth of the setting sun.

Transitioning to Blue: 

As I moved downward, I gradually introduced blue paint, blending it with the red where they met. This created a smooth gradient effect that symbolizes the transition from sunset to dusk. The colors blend together in the middle of the canvas, representing that beautiful mid-time that is neither day nor night.

Perfecting the Blend: 

I took my time blending the red and blue together, adding more paint as needed to achieve a seamless transition. This blending is key to creating a harmonious sky that feels natural and soothing.

Adding the Tree Silhouette

Painting the Trunk: Using a medium round brush and black paint, I started by painting the trunk of the tree. I began at the base of the canvas, extending the trunk upwards towards the sky.

Creating the Branches: 

Next, I added branches extending from the trunk. I varied the thickness of the branches, some being thicker and more prominent, while others were finer and more delicate. This variety helps to make the tree look more realistic and natural.

Bringing the Birds to Life

Perched Birds: 

I used a small detail brush and black paint to create birds perched on the tree’s branches. These birds were simple silhouettes, with round bodies and pointed tails, adding life to the otherwise still tree.

Flying Birds: 

I also painted birds in flight around the tree. These were created using small V-shaped silhouettes, giving the impression of birds soaring through the evening sky.

Adding Ground Details

Painting Small Plants: 

At the base of the tree, I added small plants and grasses using black paint and a detail brush. These plants help ground the tree in its environment and add depth to the scene.

Balancing the Composition: 

I added a few more plants around the tree to ensure the composition felt balanced and complete. The small details are important in creating a cohesive and visually appealing painting.

Final Touches

Refining the Gradient: 

I revisited the sky to refine the gradient, making sure the transition between red and blue was smooth and even. This step is crucial for achieving the desired effect of a peaceful, glowing sky.


Optional Highlights: 🖌️

For a final touch, I mixed a small amount of white with blue to add subtle highlights on the tree branches and birds. This step is optional but adds a nice dimension to the painting, suggesting the last rays of sunlight.
